travel, food, culture, and the border wall photography

Laurie’s love of food, culture, and travel grew through photo assignments taking her to markets, kitchens, farms, and restaurants around the U.S. and the world. She has photographed more than 35 cookbooks and many regional and national publications, including 5280 magazine, Food & Wine, Sunset, and Saveur.

Laurie Smith tells stories through narrative photography, exploring the complexities of culture. She approaches her subjects honestly, with her Leica and a monopod strapped over her shoulder, taking advantage of the beauty of natural light as she captures the story unfolding in front of her.

With her West Texas roots pulling her, more recently, she has turned her lens to the U.S.–Mexico border to document the border wall and the ensuing crisis of immigration.
